I’m going to tell you the story of Serenea

My name is Helen Alden, and I'm the founder of Serena.

Our mission is simple: to help people sleep better and wake up pain-free. As someone who has personally struggled with restless nights due to discomfort, I know how much a good night’s sleep can impact our daily lives.

This is why we’ve designed our products with ergonomic support, premium materials, and thoughtful craftsmanship—because everyone deserves to feel rested and rejuvenated.

Thank you for trusting Serenea to be a part of your wellness journey. Your comfort is our priority.

And now, it's time for me to tell you more about me :

My story

I’ve struggled with back pain my whole life… until I finally found the solution.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had back pain.

When I was eight years old, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. It wasn’t a severe form, but it was enough to cause daily discomfort—especially at the end of the day and when waking up in the morning.

I went through years of physiotherapy and osteopathy sessions.

Every morning, I woke up feeling exhausted, stiff, and sometimes with a tingling sensation in my legs.

I tried countless mattresses, pillows… but nothing really worked.

And over time, things only got worse.

As an adult, my back pain became more intense, and my nights more restless.

I tried everything—memory foam mattresses, ergonomic pillows, recommended sleeping positions…

Nothing truly made a difference.

Until one day, during yet another visit to my osteopath, he asked me a question that changed everything:

"Helen, you sleep on your side, don’t you?"

Of course! I had always slept on my side—it was my natural position.

Then he told me something so simple, yet something no one had ever explained to me before:

"If you sleep on your side without support, your pelvis becomes misaligned. It’s as if your spine is twisted all night long. The result? Lower back pain, hip tension, and recurring sciatica."

His recommendation?

To sleep with a pillow between my knees to maintain the ideal posture and relieve pressure on my spine.

The failures and frustration…

I was so relieved to finally have a potential solution!

That very evening, I grabbed a pillow from my home and placed it between my knees.

The result? No difference.

The pillow was too soft, and I kept having to readjust it.

So, I ordered a "specialised" knee pillow from Amazon.

The result? Way too big, bulky, and impossible to keep in place…

Then I tried a more "high-end" model recommended on a forum.

The result? It was better and more comfortable, but the pillow would still fall out of place every night.

Morning after morning, I woke up with the same pain. It was beyond frustrating…

Why was there no product truly designed for comfort and real support?

I shared my frustration with my osteopath, and that’s when he jokingly said:

"You should create your own! You already know exactly what’s wrong with the ones on the market."

Creating the perfect pillow… a real challenge!

Strangely enough, and maybe out of sheer frustration, I took his words seriously.

The problem? At the time, I had just £2,000 to my name and absolutely no experience in product design…

But one thing was certain—if no one else was going to create the ideal knee pillow, I would do it myself… with expert guidance.

Together with my osteopath, I spent over a year searching for the perfect solution.

He helped me understand the real mechanics of the body in a lying position, and why most knee pillows on the market failed to provide long-term relief.

Together, we studied the best shapes, densities, and materials to ensure perfect spinal alignment and optimal comfort.

Every prototype was tested by patients suffering from lower back pain and sciatica, with gradual adjustments based on their feedback.

  • Finding the right foam → Not too firm. Not too soft. Just the right balance for comfort.
  • Creating the ideal shape → Slim enough to be comfortable, wide enough to keep the pelvis aligned.
  • Adding an adjustable strap → To keep it in place all night long.
  • Choosing the perfect cover → Breathable and washable to prevent overheating.

After seven prototypes and dozens of nights of testing, we finally got it right.

A pillow that adapts to the body, rather than forcing a rigid posture.

A pillow that stays in place all night without slipping out of bed.

A pillow that actually relieves back and hip pain.

The first sales… without any marketing.

To my surprise, the pillow started selling on its own—just through recommendations from my osteopath to his patients.

Within the first few weeks, the feedback was so positive that word-of-mouth began to spread.

Some patients came back to buy a second pillow for a loved one, while others asked where they could get another.

I then introduced the product to other physiotherapists and osteopaths in my area, and their feedback was just as enthusiastic.

That’s when I realised—this wasn’t just another product.

This was a solution that thousands of people were searching for but never finding.

That’s when my husband, Greg, said to me:

"Helen, you need to make this available to everyone."

And that’s how Serenea was born.

Today, hundreds of people use my knee pillow every night, and I receive messages every day from customers telling me how it’s changed their sleep.

And that, for me, is the greatest reward!

If you’re reading this, maybe you’re struggling with lower back pain, hip tension, or sciatica, and you’ve tried everything without success.

If that’s the case, I know exactly how you feel.

And maybe Serenea will change your nights the way it changed mine ✨

Love 💙
